Erica Haas, HNTB

There are 50 bridges across the North Split and Erica Haas knows everything about each one. She is the Bridge Lead for HNTB who is serving as the Technical Procurement Advisor to the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT).

In the early stages of the project, specific criteria were developed that included design and aesthetic requirements and commitments made to the public. As North Split reconstruction nears completion, Erica is focused on ensuring original project criteria are being met.

“I enjoy knowing that the work I do each day is contributing to a safer, more efficient transportation system,” said Haas. “As is the case with the North Split, projects can take years to move from concept to completed construction. It is rewarding to see the final product and to ensure we are delivering what we said we would.”

A lifelong lover of math, logic and problem-solving, Erica became interested in a STEM-related future after completing a summer engineering program in high school. From there, she discovered a passion for transportation.

“I love the idea of using my skills to help connect people to each other safely,” remarked Haas.

Haas recommended other women interested in a STEM career to be sure to speak up. Ask to be considered for specific projects and find a mentor.

“Be courageous,” Haas advised. “Once you’ve started your journey, spread the message and encourage other women who may be considering STEM related careers.  When we make ourselves more visible, we make it easier for others to see themselves succeeding as well.”
