MARION COUNTY, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) reminds motorists the 18-month closure of the North Split Interchange in downtown Indianapolis is set to begin this weekend. Major reconstruction is expected to close the I-65/I-70 southbound lanes between the North Split and Washington Street on or after May 15 with the full closure of the interchange expected May 16, weather permitting.

During the full closure, I-65 and I-70 between the North Split and Washington Street will be closed to all traffic while bridges and roadways are reconstructed. However, access in and out of downtown will remain via the I-70 westbound exit ramp to Michigan or Ohio streets and the Pine Street entrance ramp to I-70 eastbound. In addition, the I-65 southbound to I-70 eastbound and I-70 westbound to I-65 northbound connections will remain open to traffic during construction. At Washington Street, the entrance ramp to I-65 southbound and the exit ramp from I-65 northbound will also remain open.

Currently, the Michigan Street exit is closed for reconstruction, while the Ohio and Fletcher Avenue exits remain open. The Michigan Street exit is scheduled to reopen at the end of June, at which time the Ohio Street exit will close for reconstruction. The Fletcher Avenue exit will be closed during the full closure.

Access to downtown Indianapolis will be maintained via:

  • I-70 westbound exit ramp to Michigan or Ohio St.
  • Pine St. entrance ramp to I-70 eastbound
  • I-65 northbound/I-70 eastbound exit ramp to Washington St.
  • I-65 northbound and southbound to Martin Luther King. Jr./West St.
  • I-65 southbound to Meridian St.
  • All existing ramps on I-70 west of the South Split

Detour routes for the through traffic will use parts of I-465 between the I-65 north the I-70 east junctions. The detour for I-70 will use the south leg of I-465. And the detour for I-65 will use I-65 to I-70 in the South Split.

In addition, a temporary overnight closure of the ramp from I-70 eastbound to I-65/I-70 northbound is scheduled to occur on or after the evening of Monday, May 17 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., weather dependent. This temporary closure is needed while barrier wall is placed on I-70 eastbound (west of the South Split) for the dedicated Washington Street exit. During the closure, motorists traveling on I-70 eastbound will be detoured on I-65 southbound to Raymond Street. Drivers will then be directed to turn left (west) onto Raymond Street and then left again (north) onto the entrance ramp to I-65 northbound in order to access I-65/I-70 northbound and the Washington Street exit ramp. In case of inclement weather, the temporary overnight closure will be rescheduled.
