The Monon Trail will close intermittently from June through August with detours available for trail traffic

INDOT announced today that the Monon Loop will experience a series of closures along 10th Street to accommodate the relocation and replacement of utilities by AES Indiana related to the North Split project.

Trail traffic will be temporarily redirected to public sidewalks along College Avenue and 10th Street, and will vary from all day to several minutes, dependent on the scope of work. Closures are scheduled to begin June 21 and are estimated to end August 25, weather permitting.

As part of the North Split project, AES Indiana must work adjacent to or across the Monon Loop to relocate a high voltage electric line. Below are the anticipated impacts to the Monon Loop in the coming month.

  • June 21 and 22 – There will be brief, temporary closures while materials are moved across the trail. During the temporary closures of the Monon Loop, signage and workers will direct bike and pedestrian traffic to the sidewalk across College Avenue.
  • June 23 and 24 – The Monon Loop will be closed between 10th Street and College Avenue. The detour will use the sidewalk along the east side of College Avenue down to 10th Street, then follow the sidewalk on the north side of 10th Street to connect to the Indianapolis Cultural Trail.
  • July 12 – The Monon Loop will close between 10th Street and College Avenue, using the same detour.

Access to all parks in the project area will be maintained at all times during construction.

Once reconstruction of the North Split interchange is complete in 2022, the Monon Loop will become a permanent extension of the Monon Trail.
