Monon Loop will provide access to the Monon Trail during North Split interchange reconstruction

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announced today that the new Monon Loop is set to open on or after Monday morning, May 24. This permanent section of trail will serve as a detour during construction of the North Split to ensure public access to the Monon Trail throughout construction.

Pedestrian traffic from the Monon Trail will be shifted to the Monon Loop beginning at 7 a.m. on Monday, weather dependent. The section of the Monon Trail from 10th Street to just south of 15th Street will remain closed during construction through the end of next year.

Construction began on the Monon Loop in late 2020. This new connection to the Monon Trail will serve as the pedestrian detour route while a portion of the Monon Trail is closed during reconstruction of the North Split interchange. The current Monon Trail runs beneath several interstate bridges within the interchange. The new Monon Loop will remain after the North Split project is complete in November 2022.

The Monon Loop was constructed within existing right-of-way and follows the Old Northside Trail. The new trail continues west/southwest to College Avenue. The existing sidewalk along College Avenue has been reconstructed to a 12-foot-wide, multi-use path along the east side of the roadway. The Monon Loop connects to the Indianapolis Cultural Trail A Legacy of Gene and Marilyn Glick at 10th Street.

Access to all parks in the project area will be maintained at all times during construction. The Frank and Judy O’Bannon Old Northside Soccer park and a portion of the Old Northside Trail will be reconstructed and widened within the Frank and Judy O’Bannon Old Northside Soccer Park.

INDOT encourages drivers to slow down, exercise caution and drive distraction-free through all work zones.
