10th Street bridge demolition will impact traffic and IndyGo routes as North Split work continues

 

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announced today the upcoming closure of 10th Street between College Avenue and Dorman Street for the demolition of the I-65 bridge over 10th Street. This short-term closure is part of the larger North Split reconstruction project.

On or after Thursday, May 27, 10th Street between College Avenue and Dorman Street will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic while the bridge over 10th Street is demolished. The 10th Street work is estimated to be completed on or after June 25. Local business access between College Avenue and Bellefontaine Street will be provided.

  • During this local closure, eastbound traffic will be detoured from 10th Street to northbound College Avenue, to eastbound 16th Street onto eastbound Commerce Avenue, to eastbound Massachusetts Avenue, to southbound Rural Street returning to 10th Street.
  • Westbound traffic will be detoured from 10th Street to northbound Rural Street, to westbound Massachusetts Avenue onto Commerce Avenue, to westbound 16th Street, to southbound College Avenue returning to 10th Street.

Pedestrian and bike traffic will be detoured to the newly constructed Monon Loop.

The closure of 10th Street will impact IndyGo bus routes 10, 11 and 21. During the closure, inbound routes for IndyGo bus routes 11 and 21 traveling to the Carson Transit Center will travel along the following detour routes.

  • Route 11 will detour from 10th Street to southbound Dorman Street, to westbound St. Clair Street, to southbound Massachusetts Avenue returning to the regular route to the Carson Transit Center.
  • Route 21 will detour from Massachusetts Avenue to southbound Dorman Street, to westbound St. Clair Street, to southbound Massachusetts Avenue returning to the regular route to the Carson Transit Center.

Also during the closure, outbound routes for IndyGo bus routes 11 and 21 will use the following detours.

  • Heading outbound, Route 11 will detour from Massachusetts Avenue to eastbound St. Clair Street, to northbound Highland Avenue returning to 10th
  • Heading outbound, Route 21 will detour from Ohio Street to northbound College Avenue, to eastbound St. Clair Street, to northbound Highland Street returning to 10th Street onto Brookside Avenue.

During the closure, eastbound and westbound routes for IndyGo bus Route 10 will use the following detours.

  • Heading eastbound, route 10 will detour from 10th Street eastbound, to southbound College Avenue, to eastbound St. Clair Street, to northbound Highland Street returning to 10th Street.
  • Heading westbound, route 10 will detour from 10th Street westbound, to southbound Dorman Street, to westbound St. Clair Street, to northbound College Avenue returning to 10th Street.

In addition to the work at 10th Street, between May 24 and June 5, weather permitting, several intersections throughout the project area will be restricted for utility work. Local streets affected include Market Street, Michigan Street, College Avenue, Ohio Street and Washington Street. Only one of the five intersections will be affected each night.

From May 24-26, there will be nightly closures for barrier wall placement on I-65/I-70 as work continues on the North Split.

  • May 24-25: One lane will be closed between I-65 southbound at Alabama Street and I-70 eastbound at Roosevelt Avenue between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.
  • May 25-26: One lane of I-70 westbound between Bloyd and Lewis streets will be closed between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m.
