Christine Pickering, Construction Project Supervisor, INDOT
Across the North Split reconstruction there is a lot of concrete, and it’s Christine Pickering’s job to ensure every single yard of it is good concrete. As a Construction Project Supervisor for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), each time concrete is poured, every 50 yards across the massive project, Christine must test it for air and moisture.
“It is a big job on a big project,” remarked Christine on a recent break from the site.
The North Split is one of many projects Christine has worked on throughout her 25-year INDOT career. Initially starting on the highway maintenance team in 1998, Christine later transferred to a position as a supervisor within the design and surveying department. In 2005, Christine made her way into construction as an inspector and earned the title of project supervisor in 2016, where she continues to serve today.
Reflecting on her tenure as a woman in STEM, Christine notes communication has simultaneously acted as a challenge and an opportunity.
“Sometimes people do not want to listen to what you have to say, assuming you do not know what you are talking about,” Christine said. “But on the other hand, there are so many people there to help you with anything, even one little question.”
For any woman considering a career in STEM, Christine says to stay positive, keep a smile on their face and strength in their voice.
“Keep your head up. You will face a lot of ups and downs, some will respect you some will not, but just remember you earned and worked hard for where you are, and don’t let anyone ruin your day.”
